WAITING FOR THE SNOW!!
Many of us who have lived in the Ohio Valley for long know that we don't have the most predictable weather. In fact most Meteorologists agree that the Ohio Valley is in the top 10 hardest regions to predict. 2011 certainly has been a year that we will all remember for its weather extremes...with rain being the most significant element. This has been the wettest year ever! I'm sure all of our friends in Louisville will remember how the Derby Festival was impacted by weather this year. The Chow Wagon had to be moved off of the Great Lawn because it was under water, the Great Steamboat Race was postponed to July, and Thunder Over Louisville was a total washout!
As the year comes to a close, we keep in trend with the past 12 months. December has been the warmest and wettest in the 30+ years I have lived here...possibly ever! I look out my office window at the top of Graber's Express and all I see is grass and mud, where there should be snow and skiers. The steady sound of rain pelts my window ledge as we all sit here waiting...hoping that it will turn to snow like the National Weather Service says it will. We know that once it falls...once that cold Arctic air funnels down into the area, the skiers will come and the season will begin. Maybe once that happens it will be powder every weekend until mid-March. Who knows....not even the Weathermen know. But I can tell all of you ski bums out there, that we are here every day waiting for the temps to drop below freezing...waiting for the snow so that we can open the slopes and see everyone on the hill having a great time. Until then, keep checking the website, our Facebook page and the weather reports. I just got a call from a guy in Cloverdale, IN....just 30 miles north of us and he says the snow is coming down hard. Maybe this is it! I can tell you, we here at the Peaks are ready to rock and just like you we are waiting for the snow!
