Operations to RESUME on Thurs. Feb 2ND
UPDATED 2.1.12 - Well two days off of the snow has helped, believe it or not. We did loose a few inches of snow from the wind and rain, but we still have quite a bit left. Tomorrow, Thursday, February 2nd, Paoli Peaks will resume operations as planned, opening our doors for regular hours of operation - 10am-9pm. As soon as it gets close to freezing tonight, our groomers are going to hit the slopes, pushing and grooming the snow until it is ready for you. Currently, there are a few bare spots at the top of the hill and we lost the snow on the lifts' off-ramps. We will be working tonight and tomorrow morning moving snow to cover those spots.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we will continue to operate with normal operating hours. The Big Air competition has been scheduled to Saturday, February 25th, but the Girl Scout day is still on for this Sunday. Keep thinking cold, really cold and hopefully we can get some good snowmaking weather ASAP!
Posted 1.30.12 -Operations Suspended for 1/31 and 2/1
It's no secret that winter hasn't fully arrived yet. December and January has been filled with rain, thunderstorms, 60-degree weather and even a few tornadoes! In between all of that, we would get days of actual winter weather, but those are becoming fewer and farther between. This week is no exception. Today, Monday, brought sunny skies and highs near 56... and the trend will only continue: Tuesday 61/50 degrees, Wednesday 58/40, Thursday 54/35, and Friday 52/38. Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening has a likely chance of rain. If you aren't picking up what I'm throwing down, this type of weather isn't good for the small amount of snow that we currently have.
Over much debate, we have decided to suspend operations until Thursday. That means Paoli Peaks will be closed on Tuesday, January 31st and Wednesday, February 1st. By suspending operations, we hope to try to preserve the current snow base. You may be wondering how that will help. Well, let me explain... Each morning, when our Mountain Ops groom the snow, the snow cats churn up the first few layers of snow and then flatten it back out in a corduroy design. Grooming the snow inadvertently acts as an aerator. Grooming combined with people skiing and snowboarding can actually aid in melting the snow when it is mixed with warm, rainy weather. We hope that by suspending operations for a few days, we will be able to sustain the snow that we have until the weekend.
On Thursday, February 2nd, Paoli Peaks will be operational again; opening for regular hours (10am - 9pm). Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all operate on regular operating hours. The Girl Scout Day on Sunday, February 5th will still occur. However, The Big Air competition is rescheduled to Saturday, February 25th. All other details are the same.
The hopeful news is, the weathermen are calling for colder temperatures to return sometime around the 4th or 5th. You can bet your underwear that we will be resuming our snowmaking efforts as soon as that cold weather returns! If you have any additional questions, call 812-723-4696. Our main office will be staffed on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am - 5pm to assist you. Keep thinking cold, really cold!
